The Billings Ovulation Method – Fertility Awareness Method Overview

The Billings Ovulation Method is a natural fertility awareness approach that helps couples understand female fertility by tracking changes in vulvar sensation and cervical mucus. This method is described as a “cervical mucus-only” method.

The Billings Ovulation Method was founded by Dr. John Billings and his wife, Dr. Evelyn Billings. Their journey toward discovering this method began in the early 1950s when John, a neurologist, was approached by the Catholic Church to explore natural family planning methods that could align with the Church’s teachings. Working closely with Evelyn, they conducted extensive studies involving thousands of women worldwide and confirmed that changes in cervical mucus could be a reliable way to predict the fertility window.

Biomarkers Tracked

The primary biomarkers used in the Billings Ovulation Method are: 

  1. Vulvar Sensation
  2. The appearance of cervical mucus.

Other optional biomarkers a woman may notice include a swollen vulva, increased sensitivity, or enlargement of lymph nodes in the genital area.

How the Billings Method Works

As a woman goes through her day, she feels different sensations in her vulva and observes cervical mucus when it appears, whether on toilet paper or underwear.
When observing any sensation and cervical mucus, it’s important to record it in simple terms. 

As ovulation approaches, mucus typically becomes clearer and more like egg white, with a slippery sensation signaling peak fertility. 

It is important to note that when using the Billings method, we do not touch the mucus with our fingers because the vulva is more sensitive. Over time, we learn to tune into these sensations.

By using the Billings method, we begin to recognize patterns of fertility and infertility through sensations and the appearance of cervical mucus. We learn to identify the body's transitions from the Basic Infertile Pattern (BIP) to the fertile phase, which ends with the slippery sensation known as "Peak" day, closely corresponding to ovulation. After observing Peak Day, we enter the infertile phase of the cycle. (Note: Peak Day has specific criteria that must be followed.)

Charting involves daily recording of cervical mucus observations, either on paper charts or through Billings-approved apps. The notes should include the sensation at the vulva and any visual changes in the mucus.

 

Observations are made multiple times throughout the day, such as when a woman uses the bathroom or when sensation or mucus is present. This ensures accurate recognition of mucus patterns and fertility changes.

Disadvantages of the Billings Method

Daily Commitment: Women who use this method must be diligent in making daily observations.

Requires Partner Cooperation: Couples using the Billings method for contraception need to agree on abstaining during the fertile phase.

Abstinence: The effectiveness of avoiding pregnancy is based on abstaining from any sexual activities during the fertile phase.

No BBT Tracking: Basal Body Temperature (BBT) is a woman’s body temperature when she is fully at rest. The lack of BBT tracking in the Billings method simplifies the process but can make it more challenging to confirm ovulation, especially if someone experiences mucus throughout the cycle.

Although the Billings method is simple, it may take a few cycles to fully understand and confidently identify fertile signs. 

Billings is taught by certified instructors, often with personalized, ongoing support.

As with any new habit, starting the Billings method may require some adjustments. However, a strong motivation and a clear "why" can make incorporating these changes easier. Having a supportive partner who shares responsibilities can also make the process smoother. 

Since there are no external tools required to practice this method, you may find that it is simpler to integrate into your daily life.
